Hot Topic: Carbon Measurement programme

December 22, 2009 - Many APUG members expressed interest in the carbonReduction scheme at the recent APUG Conference and Steering Committee in Kuala Lumpur. Please find attached a copy of the Carbon measurement brochure.

It was agreed that Achilles would circulate the full presentation and accompanying brochure to all members, for subsequent circulation to staff responsible for the environment and sustainability. Interested organisations might then form a community sub-group, as in the UK.

The main points from the presentation and discussion were:

  • Whatever the political issues, environmental responsibility and carbon measurement are almost certain to be required of large organisations, and is already a legislative requirement for large emission companies in Australia.
  • The Achilles carbon measurement system is based on a scientific method developed by Landcare, a government and university research body in New Zealand.
  • The system provides CEMARS certification, the only internationally recognised certificate for carbon measurement, plus meets ISO14065 and ISO14064-1.
  • Achilles has implemented the system with six major utilities in the UK, and the APUG system follows the same procedures.
  • Full carbon measurement (Scope 3) requires carbon measurement of suppliers, and the Achilles system links with the Supplier Management System (SMS).
  • The same Buyer and Supplier community advantages apply to carbon measurement as with the SMS (Buyers share the Supplier data, who only have to be measured once to provide carbon measurement data to all subscribing Buyers).
  • Achilles carbon measurement system is Measureable, Reportable and Verifiable.

 

Achilles will organise a meeting of organisations interested in discussing carbon measurement. It might be necessary for separate meetings to be held in Australia and Asia.
